I am wondering what your opinions are- I am going to buy a camera- I have it down to 2 choices- a Canon…?
Powershot SX10-IS or a Nikon D40. I have a Minolta SRT100 that I love to shoot and I have 2 lenses for it. I also have a point and shoot Kodak that I am outgrowing. I still love taking film photos with the film SLR. I have read reviews on both cameras and I like what each has to offer. I am not worried about the auto focus so much on the D40- as I seem to take good shots with my old SLR. But that powershot has a lot of nice features without having to lug around a bunch of lenses. I am just not sure and would like the opinions of the photo bunch here! Thank you! I am not a professional at all- I just enjoy photography and really enjoy it. I want to take better photos and I love the art of it.

If i was you, i would go with the Nikon for the simple reason that you can get interchangeable lens.
Furthermore, i would go with a Canon xti or xsi. If you see yourself getting more and more into photography then a DSLR with interchangeable lens is a must, and you dont have to take a ton of lens with you.
The thing that i like most about my canon is the flexibility. You want to go shooting at night? You have the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens for about 80 dollars. You want to shoot birds at the zoo? you have the 80-250mm telephoto for about 250 dollars.
If you do decide to go with the power shot you are limited in the long run really.
Hope i helped, voytek.

I would get the Powershot if I were you and your not going to go that pro.
I have a Powershot S5, I love it, the SX-10 is a step up from my S5.
I was in the same position but the lenses would cost way too much so I picked the zoom and love it.
