'no memory card' error in canon powershot sx10 is when the memory card is inside the camera?

I am facing an issue with canon SX10IS which was bought last june from Amazon. After putting the memory card inside the camera and switching it on the display shows ‘no memory card’? i have tried another memory card also. But i am getting the same error. What could be the reason? Can anyone please tell me a solution… Please help…

I have a SX20 IS and would like to know how to take long exposure shots at sunset. It works at night, but at sunset, it is too bright and the photo turns out completely white.
I prefer to use Manual (M) mode, because I can change Aperture and Shutter speed

Help in buying a Camera?

I am interested in buying a nearly pro camera. I have made some research on different types of cameras and read various reviews but I am afraid that they were a bit biased. I was looking mainly at Canon and Nikon although I would appreciate it if you suggest any other brands.
I focused mainly on the Canon Powershot SX20 IS since I found out that it has x20 optical zoom Then on various reviews I found out that it is more worth to buy the SX10 rather than the SX20 which confused me. Can you please give me your opinion about this camera or at least suggest me a better camera also in your opinion, price ranging between 0-0 or even lower 
Also besides suggesting any types of cameras that in your opinion are good, can you please point out those specifications, like ISO, that make a good camera and give me examples of the best specifications found on the market so when i carry out some research on my own I will have an idea of which cameras shall I opt in buying.
Thanks in advance and I really appreciate your help!!
P.s can you also point out for me the difference between dSRL and SRL cameras?

Powershot SX10-IS or a Nikon D40. I have a Minolta SRT100 that I love to shoot and I have 2 lenses for it. I also have a point and shoot Kodak that I am outgrowing. I still love taking film photos with the film SLR. I have read reviews on both cameras and I like what each has to offer. I am not worried about the auto focus so much on the D40- as I seem to take good shots with my old SLR. But that powershot has a lot of nice features without having to lug around a bunch of lenses. I am just not sure and would like the opinions of the photo bunch here! Thank you! I am not a professional at all- I just enjoy photography and really enjoy it. I want to take better photos and I love the art of it.
